Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Red gel food coloring
  • Optional: Chocolate chips, crushed nuts

Instructions

  1. Cream together butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  2. Mix in the egg, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt; gradually add to the wet ingredients.
  4. Divide the dough in half; color one half with red gel food coloring and chill for at least 1 hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Roll pieces of red and white dough into ropes, twist them together to form candy canes.
  6. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 8–10 minutes, or until just set. Let cool.

Notes

Ensure butter is at room temperature for best results. Don’t overbake to avoid hard cookies.
