- Red gel food coloring

Instructions
- Cream together butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
- Mix in the egg, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt; gradually add to the wet ingredients.
- Divide the dough in half; color one half with red gel food coloring and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Roll pieces of red and white dough into ropes, twist them together to form candy canes.
- Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 8–10 minutes, or until just set. Let cool.
Notes
Ensure butter is at room temperature for best results. Don’t overbake to avoid hard cookies.
