Description

German Goulash is a hearty and flavorful stew originating from Hungary, now a beloved classic in German cuisine. This ultimate recipe features tender beef, vibrant vegetables, and aromatic spices, perfect for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs beef chuck, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 large onions, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 bell peppers (any color), chopped
  • 4 medium carrots, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons paprika (sweet or smoked)
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
  2. Brown the beef cubes in batches on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  3. Add chopped onions to the same pot and cook until translucent. Stir in minced garlic and cook for one minute more.
  4. Add chopped bell peppers and sliced carrots, cooking for about 5 minutes until softened.
  5. Stir in tomato paste and mix well to coat the vegetables.
  6. Add paprika, caraway seeds, dried thyme, and bay leaf, mixing until fragrant.
  7. Return the browned beef to the pot and stir to combine with the vegetable mixture.
  8. Slowly pour in the beef broth, scraping the bottom of the pot to release browned bits.
  9. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  10. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed. Remove the bay leaf.
  11. Let the goulash rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld.
