- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
- Cinnamon, to taste
- Nutmeg, to taste
- 8 eggs
- 2 cups prepared eggnog
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Grease a 9- by 13-inch baking dish or two 8- by 8-inch baking dishes with butter or nonstick cooking spray.
- Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and maple syrup until boiling. Remove from heat and pour into the prepared baking dish.
- Spread the cubed French bread over the brown sugar mixture. Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg to taste.
- In a large bowl, whisk the eggs. Add eggnog and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
- Pour the custard evenly over the bread cubes. Press down gently to ensure all pieces are soaked.
- Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
- Remove from the fridge. Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C). Bake covered for 40 minutes.
- Increase oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and remove the foil. Bake uncovered for an additional 5 to 10 minutes, until puffed and golden brown.
Notes
- For best results, soak the bread overnight.
- Adjust cinnamon and nutmeg to your taste preference.
- Serve warm with syrup or whipped cream.
