Description

A delicious Dutch Caramel Apple Pie recipe featuring tart apples, warm spices, a flaky crust, gooey caramel, and a crunchy crumb topping. This fall classic is perfect for holidays and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (9-inch) pie crust
  • 6 to 7 cups tart apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 25 to 26 soft caramel candies, unwrapped
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Coarse sugar, for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pie Crust: Roll out your pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie pan. Crimp the edges and refrigerate.
  2. Make the Caramel Sauce: Melt caramel candies with heavy cream over low heat until smooth. Reserve 1/2 cup for the filling and the rest for drizzling.
  3. Make the Apple Filling: Toss sliced apples with lemon juice. Mix in granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt, and flour. Stir in 1/2 cup of caramel sauce.
  4. Make the Crumb Topping: Combine flour, brown sugar, and salt. Add softened butter and blend until crumbly.
  5. Assemble the Pie: Pour the apple mixture into the crust. Sprinkle crumb topping over the apples. Brush crust edges with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  6. Bake: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until topping is golden and filling bubbles. Tent with foil if topping browns too quickly.
  7. Cool and Serve: Cool for at least 2-3 hours before slicing. Drizzle with remaining caramel sauce. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream if desired.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn for the best flavor.
  • Caramel sauce can be made from scratch.
  • Store pie at room temperature for 1 day or in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving.
